“From the beginning, one of our goals had been to build courses that players could remember.” – Dan Maples
Mission accomplished at Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club. This 27-hole beauty provides and experience that keeps golfers coming back for more round after round. PGA General Manager, Tim Tilma and his staff strive to maintain the course at an impeccable standard. That dedication and drive plays a big part in the reason that Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club is the 2018 Golf Course of the Year in TheGolfDirector.com Video Magazine.
Located in the quiet town of Sunset Beach, North Carolina, Sandpiper Bay is just 20 minutes from Myrtle Beach and well worth the drive. Golfers will find a classic style clubhouse waiting to welcome them to the course. There is also a practice range complete with a short game area and large practice putting green just off to the left of the clubhouse. The golf course boasts three very different 9-hole layouts that each present their own unique features and challenges for golfers to encounter during play. Miniverde Bermuda greens give golfers excellent putting conditions throughout the course.
Before golfers even get to the golf course they are in for a treat. PGA General Manager, Tim Tilma and his staff are dedicated to serving all their guests with pride and southern hospitality. The goal is to give every guest an wonderful experience and help create memories they will take home with them. Carolina hospitality with a country club experience set in a tastefully casual setting is what members and visiting golfers alike can expect to receive the minute they step onto the grounds at Sandpiper Bay.
PGA Certified Head Professional, Brett Thomaswick and his staff have turned the golf shop into a must see attraction! They carry NFL, MLB, NCAA and NHL golf apparel along with Under Armour, Adidas, Antigua and Chase 54. In fact Brett and the gang were awarded as the Bridgestone Golf Best NFL Merchandise Display in 2015 and 2016! They also are the #1 retail golf shop in the Carolinas for Cleveland Srixon golf products.
The Sand Nine is a classic layout that has rolling hills and fairways with lined with Carolina pine trees. One of the two original nines, the tee boxes are elevated providing a wonderful view of the holes, many of which are dog-legs. With three par 3s and two par 5s there is an opportunity for golfers to put up a low score with several birdie chances.
The Piper Nine has quite a unique scorecard. Three par 3, three par 4s and three par 5s make up the second of the two original nines at Sandpiper Bay. There is a bit more water here than on the Sand course so as much as golfers might want to take advantage of the extra par 5 they need to play smart.
The third course is the Bay Nine. It has more water on it than the other two sides combined. Strategically placed both along the fairways and near the greens, the water provides amazing scenery and a tremendous challenge for players to take in. Definitely the toughest of the three courses.
